The 99th Mashemeji Derby belonged to the Green Army. On a vibrant Sunday evening at a packed Nyayo National Stadium, Gor Mahia secured a vital 1-0 victory over their eternal rivals AFC Leopards, avenging their first-leg loss and taking a massive step toward reclaiming the FKF Premier League title.

The Decisive Moment
After 80 minutes of high-intensity, cagey football where both defenses stood firm, the breakthrough finally arrived in the 85th minute. Following a half-cleared corner, left-back Bryton Onyona sent a dangerous cross back into the area. Alpha Onyango controlled the ball brilliantly before firing a clinical strike into the left corner, sparking wild celebrations in the green half of the stadium.

Tactical Chess Match

The match was a tactical battle between Gor’s Charles Akonnor and Leopards’ Fred Ambani.
Early Pressure: Gor Mahia threatened early through Ghanaian import Ebenezer Adukwaw, who saw a free-kick whistle just wide in the 14th minute.

Goalkeeping Heroics: Leopards’ Humphrey Katasi kept his side in the game with two world-class saves, denying both Adukwaw and Patrick Essombe from close range.

History Shattered: The result marked a significant personal blow for Fred Ambani, suffering his first-ever Mashemeji Derby defeat as either a player or a manager.

The Title Race: Gor Mahia Take Control
With only five matches remaining in the 2025/26 season, this victory feels like a title decider. Gor Mahia’s win effectively doubles their advantage over “Ingwe.”

”We knew a win today would give us the breathing room we needed. To do it in the derby makes it even more special,” Alpha Onyango noted during his post-match interview.

While AFC Leopards remain in second place, back-to-back losses have severely dented their hopes of a first league title in over two decades. For K’Ogalo, the focus now shifts to their next fixture against Murang’a Seal, where a win could put them within touching distance of the trophy.
